Peak Smart Home

Yukon Energy’s Peak Smart Home program is a landmark initiative in demand management, demonstrating innovation, leadership, and community impact. As the North’s first full-scale demand-response program to receive regulatory approval, it charts the course for managing peak demand in isolated power grids across Canada. Our partnerships with four local First Nations for this initiative also represents a first in the North.

The program introduces advanced technology that actively manages peak events by installing smart thermostats and hot water tank controllers in 500+ homes across the Yukon. It will provide a 500-kW reduction in peak demand by the end of 2024. The demand-response management system enables real-time adjustments while mitigating connectivity risks, representing a significant advancement in demand management for remote communities.

Yukon Energy exemplifies strong leadership through its partnerships with self-governing First Nations, ensuring the program meets community needs and integrates their feedback.

For participating First Nations, the program provides valuable data and control over energy demand, including benefits like leak detection for hot water tanks to prevent property damage and costly repairs. For Yukon Energy, it reduces peak demand and reliance on diesel generation, contributing to a more stable and sustainable power grid. By addressing community needs and integrating feedback, the program enhances demand management and supports broader sustainability goals, highlighting the impact of collaboration in achieving progress in the North.
