OPG 3D Laser Scanning Strategy Initiative

The Ontario Power Generation (OPG) Innovative 3D Laser Scanning Strategy Initiative, launched 8 years ago, aims to virtualize power sites, supporting OPG's focus on digitization, future readiness, and carbon emission reduction.

Originally an exploration of 3D laser scanning technology, the initiative innovation has evolved into an enterprise solution, offering virtual data of several OPG power plants to all employees, leading to significant budget and schedule savings. The initiative employs advanced 3D scanning and 5K photogrammetry innovative technology to enhance performance and efficiency. Applications include 4D scheduling, constructability, operability, maintainability, and safety reviews, virtual walkdowns, remote measurements, interference checks, and virtual training.

Over 300 locations across OPG's Nuclear and Hydro sites have been digitized, benefiting more than 5,000+ users on the OPG PowerView platform. This innovation has streamlined planning processes, improved employee safety by reducing radiation doses and exposure to hazardous environments, and enabled virtual tours of remote hydro stations, thus minimizing travel costs and time.
