Atura Power is uniquely positioned to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future in Ontario as energy demand increases due to the expansion of electrification in the industrial and transportation sectors. As more sectors strive to achieve a pathway to decarbonization the province of Ontario will require new, flexible ‘on demand’ energy resources to achieve net zero.
Atura Power owns and operates Ontario’s largest fleet of combined cycle natural gas generators with 2,715 MW of capacity across four facilities Windsor, Halton Hills, Toronto, and Greater Napanee.
Through effective fleet management, Atura Power has maximized efficiency to respond to system needs more reliably and has driven down greenhouse gas emissions. Atura Power is committed to decarbonizing our operations as we enable Ontario’s path to net-zero with reliable, low-cost energy.
When the Niagara Hydrogen Centre (NHC) comes online in 2024, hydrogen will be delivered and blended into the natural gas supply at our Halton Hills Energy Centre to power combined cycle gas turbines that produce electricity for Ontario’s grid. Initial blending will range between 5%-15% with infrastructure that is already in place and Atura is evaluating the expansion to as much as 30% in the future.
Blending of hydrogen and natural gas at Halton Hills will reduce the carbon intensity of the electricity produced during peak energy demand hours and support efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from the Ontario grid to achieve net zero emissions.
