The Grid-Scale Battery project consists of three 50 MW 4/hour battery facilities located in communities across Nova Scotia – Bridgewater, Waverley and the Valley. The project outlines the collaborations and partnerships Nova Scotia Power has been working on that help mitigate project costs for customers and work meaningfully with Mi’kmaw Communities on the clean energy transition.
This includes the first investment in Nova Scotia Power by the Wskijnu’k Mtmo’taqnuow Agency (WMA) – representing all 13 Mi’kmaw communities and committed to environmental stewardship for the future generations of Mi’kmaw and all Nova Scotians.
Through close collaboration and meaningful conversation, Nova Scotia Power and WMA worked together to find and shape a solution that fit the needs and wants of Mi’kmaw communities. This resulted in an investment arrangement that enables Mi’kmaw communities to participate as equity partners in relation to the grid-scale battery project – representing a different way of doing business for Nova Scotia Power and a step towards true economic reconciliation. It is also the first clean energy project under the Canada Infrastructure Bank’s Indigenous Equity Initiative.
The project team has been working with stakeholders and engaging communities throughout the planning stages of the development. In June 2024 Nova Scotia Power received full project approval from the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board for the capital costs required to develop the grid-scale battery facilities, and pre-liminary site work has started at all three sites. Construction will be ramping up this year and continuing through 2026, with the first site operational by 2025.
