Atura Power is developing Ontario’s largest low-carbon hydrogen production facility. As a wholly owned subsidiary of Ontario Power Generation (OPG), Atura Power will build, own and operate the Niagara Hydrogen Centre (NHC) in Niagara Falls, Ont. to catalyze the low-carbon hydrogen economy in Ontario.
The Niagara Hydrogen Centre will produce more than 2,000 tonnes of hydrogen per year using low-carbon intensity electricity provided by the Sir Adam Beck II Hydroelectric Generating Station on the Niagara River.
On January 13th, 2023 OPG and the IESO signed a regulation services agreement enabling OPG to use unutilized water to generate electricity exclusively for use by the Niagara Hydrogen Centre for low-carbon hydrogen production, while generating approximately one million dollars a year in savings for the ratepayer. The NHC includes a 20-megawatt Cummins electrolyzer manufactured in Mississauga, Ont., showcasing a made-in-Ontario low-carbon energy solution. The green hydrogen produced at the NHC will reduce emissions equivalent to taking more than 4,000 cars off the road.
The green hydrogen produced will be supporting decarbonization of regional industrial, transportation and mobility sectors as well as blending with the natural gas supply at Atura Power’s Halton Hills Generating Station.
With local low-carbon hydrogen supply, Atura Power projects will be prominent low-carbon hydrogen hubs for supplying heavy-duty trucking, municipal mobility, and heavy industrial consumers in Ontario.
