The Jim McFadgen Award for Standards Excellence will recognize an individual who has demonstrated exemplary efforts in the development, implementation, and/or promotion of standards within the industry.
Jim McFadgen was a long-time expert and leader within the standards community. At Electricity Canada, Jim represented his home utility, Nova Scotia Power, for over thirty years. Over the span of his impactful career, Jim was a shining example of proactive leadership. He made exemplary technical contributions in his field and was a powerful champion of electrical safety standards.
Electricity Canada is hoping to honour Jim’s legacy through a new association award. This award will recognize an individual who has demonstrated exemplary efforts in the development, implementation, and/or promotion of standards within the industry.

Award Eligibility
Any employee of an Electricity Canada member organization who has demonstrated exemplary efforts in the development, implementation, and/or promotion of standards within the industry.
- Contribution to Standards Development: The applicant should demonstrate a contribution to the development of new standards or the enhancement of existing ones within the utility industry. This may include:
- Participation in standard-setting committees, technical working groups, or industry consortia.
- Contribution to the drafting, review, and revision of standards documents.
- Identification of emerging trends and technologies that necessitate new standards.
- Leadership and Innovation: The applicant should exhibit leadership qualities that inspire others to embrace and champion standards within the utility sector. This may involve:
- Initiating cross-departmental collaborations to drive standardization efforts.
- Proposing innovative solutions that address challenges and improve processes through the application of standards.
- Mentoring and guiding colleagues, subordinates, or industry peers in understanding and implementing standards effectively.
- Professional Reputation: The applicant's reputation within the utility industry should reflect a commitment to excellence, integrity, and professionalism. This could be evidenced by:
- Professional memberships, certifications, or affiliations related to standards organizations or industry associations.
- Recognition through awards, honors, or acknowledgments for contributions to the field of standards development and implementation.
- A history of ethical conduct and dedication to advancing industry practices through the use of standards.
