OTTAWA (November 7, 2018) – The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) announced today that Nalcor Energy achieved the Sustainable Electricity Company™ designation, at a meeting of the Association’s board of director in Ottawa. Nalcor has focused on engaging community groups and indigenous peoples while enhancing its environmental and social responsibility programs.
“CEA is pleased to designate Nalcor Energy a Sustainable Electricity Company™ for its exceptional commitment to responsible environmental, social and economic practices, as well as to the principles of sustainable development,” said the Honourable Sergio Marchi, President and CEO of the Canadian Electricity Association.
The Sustainable Electricity Company™ designation was established by CEA for Canadian utilities from coast-to-coast-to-coast to further advance the integration of sustainability considerations in company decision-making processes. The designation requires utilities to conform to the internationally-recognized ISO 14001 standard on Environmental Management Systems and ISO 26000 Guidance on Social Responsibility. Together, they provide a platform for identifying and addressing key strategic sustainability risks and opportunities related to environmental, social and economic issues. In addition, companies must pass an independent external verification.
"Receiving the CEA Sustainability Brand Designation for our sustainability efforts is an absolute honour and is the result of the dedication and hard work of our employees,” said Stan Marshall, President and CEO of Nalcor Energy. “This designation will help deepen our unwavering commitment to minimize the impact our work has on communities where we operate, as we develop and manage Newfoundland and Labrador’s rich resources in a way that considers safety, environmental stewardship and our communities."
Distinct from the Sustainable Electricity Company™ designation, CEA and its Corporate Utility Members also demonstrate their commitment to sustainability through mandatory participation in CEA’s Sustainable Electricity program. The program takes a holistic approach to addressing sustainability issues, including environmental, societal, and economic challenges and opportunities. In addition to achieving the prestigious Sustainable Electricity Company™ designation, Saint John Energy continues to meet CEA’s Sustainable Electricity program requirements.
