OTTAWA, Ontario - August 18, 2014. The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) released its 2014 Sustainable Electricity™ Annual Report today, outlining the sustainability performance of its Corporate Utility Members during the 2013 calendar year.
The report, titled Engaged for a Sustainable Future, highlights the significant progress CEA members have made to scale back coal-fired electricity generation, reduce air emissions, and minimize the overall environmental impact of their facilities. Since 2012, there has been a 3.6% reduction in carbon dioxide (CO₂) equivalent emissions, a 2.6% reduction in sulphur dioxide (SO₂) emissions, a 2.2% decrease in nitrogen oxide emissions (NOᵪ), and a 12.9% decrease in mercury emissions.
In addition, Engaged for a Sustainable Future reports that CEA member utilities are continuing to make progress on health and safety, emergency preparedness, workplace diversity, stakeholder engagement, aboriginal relations, and energy efficiency.

CEA’s mandatory, industry-wide Sustainable Electricity™ program was developed to foster continuous member improvement in the areas of environmental, social and economic performance. CEA members report on specific performance metrics and indicators annually, which are verified by an independent, external third-party. In addition, member performance is reviewed by a Public Advisory Panel, chaired by Mike Harcourt, former Premier of British Columbia.
