Electricity Canada and its members are committed to engaging Indigenous Peoples of Canada to
nurture meaningful, long-term relationships and enhance mutually beneficial economic and business opportunities.
A new report produced by Electricity Canada, Taking Action: Collaborating with Indigenous Communities looks at member utility initiatives to engage Indigenous Peoples and their communities in the sector, particularly in four areas:
- Education/training
- Employment
- Business partnerships
- Capacity building
These initiatives draw upon the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Calls to Action.
The TRC report, released in 2015 and fully supported by the Government of Canada, which outlines 94 ‘Calls to Action’ that urge all levels of government and the corporate sector to work together to move forward with reconciliation. Section 92 of the Calls to Action urges the private sector to commit to meaningful consultation, respectful relationships and to provide equitable access to employment and training.
