Electricity Canada announces the winners of the 2024 Sustainable Electricity awards

Toronto (November 26) Electricity Canada members have been recognized for their leadership in sustainability, and for making the environment, people and communities better.

The four Sustainable Electricity awards—for sustainable strategies, continuous improvement, leadership in community partnerships and sustainable leadership— recognize the thought leaders in the electricity sector who focus on sustainable development and corporate responsibility.

At the annual Powering Partnerships summit in Toronto, Electricity Canada honoured the following companies with Sustainable Electricity awards:

Sustainable strategy award- Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro:

This award is given to a company that has demonstrated outstanding leadership and development, implementation, and maintenance of an integrated sustainability strategy within the company. Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro integrated a comprehensive sustainable strategy into their corporate strategic plan showcasing the importance of sustainability in their core business operations.  

Continuous improvement award- Hydro One:

This is awarded to a company that has demonstrated a commitment to sustainability performance improvement through new projects, programs, and initiatives.

Hydro One became the first utility in Canada to publish a Sustainable Financing Framework and establish a Sustainable Finance Working Group. This signals the importance of sustainability in future investments – backed by the over $4 billion in sustainability and green bonds Hydro One has issued.  

Leadership in community partnerships- Naka Power:

New in 2024, this award is given to a company with a strong commitment to external collaboration and partnerships with Indigenous Peoples, local communities, and other stakeholders. Naka Power’s unique partnership with Denendeh Investments and ATCO is reflected in the recent 50/50 financial ownership of Naka Power Utilities and in their longstanding relationship built up over the past 35 years.  

Leadership in community partnerships- SaskPower:

SaskPower engaged with 60,000 members of the public to discuss the next steps in the energy transition. This engagement created the SaskPower Future Supply plan and allowed the community to be fully informed on their energy future.  

Sustainable Leadership- Peter Michaud, Oakville Hydro:

This award is given to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding leadership on sustainability issues within the electricity sector. Peter Michaud has shown significant engagement and contribution to Electricity Canada’s sustainability initiatives. His input has positively impacted the restructuring of the Sustainable Electricity Program, and renewed members' interest in discussing the global warming potential of SF6.
