CEA Statement regarding the U.S.-Canada Joint Statement on Climate, Energy, and Arctic Leadership

Ottawa, March 10, 2016 – The Honourable Sergio Marchi, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Electricity Association, issued the following statement regarding the U.S.-Canada Joint Statement on Climate, Energy, and Arctic Leadership:

“CEA welcomes today’s announcement on joint action to combat climate change, cooperate on clean energy deployment, and enhance stewardship in the Arctic. CEA applauds Prime Minister Trudeau and President Obama for their ongoing leadership in addressing these critical North American and global challenges. Moreover, we believe that this work can form part of the foundation for an eventual North American Agreement on Energy and the Environment.

CEA is encouraged by the leaders’ commitments to a number of our long-held priorities such as, strengthening the integrated nature of the North American electric grid; facilitating the integration of more renewable resources; accelerating clean energy research and development; the electrification of transportation; clean electrification in remote communities; and bolstering the security and resilience of our shared grid.

Progress in all of these areas is crucial to achieving Prime Minister Trudeau and President Obama’s shared vision for a more prosperous and sustainable economy. With a Canadian electricity mix already over 80% GHG free, our sector is one of the cleanest in the world. And CEA members look forward to working with the Canadian and U.S. Governments to build a greener future for all North Americans.”
