Canadian Electricity Association Recognizes Toronto Hydro as a Sustainable Electricity Company

OTTAWA, Ontario - June 17, 2014. The Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) announced today that Toronto Hydro-Electric System Limited ("Toronto Hydro") has been designated as a Sustainable Electricity Company™. Toronto Hydro is the third electricity company in Canada to receive this prestigious appointment.

The Sustainable Electricity Company™ designation was established by CEA for utilities across Canada, which recognizes sustainability efforts and acknowledges success against the three foundational pillars of sustainability – environmental, social and economic performance. This designation requires utilities to commit to ISO 14001 standard on Environmental Management Systems and ISO 26000 Guidance on Social Responsibility. In addition, companies must also pass a third-party external verification to ensure adherence of brand criteria.

“This designation is a reaffirmation of Toronto Hydro’s long-standing commitment to corporate responsibility and making a measurable difference in the communities in which it operates,” said Jim R. Burpee, President and CEO of the Canadian Electricity Association. “I congratulate Toronto Hydro for further advancing sustainability by adhering to the rigorous criteria CEA has set.”

“Our commitment to sustainability is really a commitment to our community, employees and stakeholders. As an overarching driver, sustainability plays an important role in our success,” said Anthony Haines, President and CEO. “We’re honoured to receive this designation and recognition from CEA.”

“The designation of Toronto Hydro is another indication that this sector is mainstreaming sustainability in its decision-making and operations.” said David Morrison, President and CEO of Yukon Energy Corporation and Chair of the CEA Board Committee on Sustainability. “I applaud Toronto Hydro for this significant milestone and look forward to seeing more companies achieving this designation in the future.”
