Statement by CEA on Generation Energy Council Report

Ottawa (June 29, 2018) – The Honourable Sergio Marchi, President and CEO of the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA), issued the following statement on the publication of the Generation Energy Council’s report on Canada’s energy transition:

“Canada has a significant advantage as the world transitions to a more sustainable, clean growth future: abundant, clean and reliable power. Canadian electricity is among the cleanest in the world, with more than 82% of our power already greenhouse gas emissions-free. Our members have reduced emissions by nearly 30% since 2005, and we’re on track to deliver another 30% by 2030.

As a supporter of the transition to cleaner forms of energy, CEA welcomes the Generation Energy Council’s report published yesterday. In particular, CEA applauds the report’s support for “clean electrification.” This reaffirms CEA’s longstanding position that the electrification of transportation, buildings and industrial processes is a critical and primary pathway to a low-carbon future. We also applaud the report’s call for a greater focus on energy efficiency as well as for the meaningful involvement by Indigenous communities in all aspects of Canada’s energy transition.

CEA is encouraged that the report recommends as a next step the development of a national energy transition strategy and plan. Our industry remains committed and ready to work with all levels of government, Indigenous communities and Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast to shape our collective aspirations into an integrated plan for Canada’s energy future. Electricity will play a critical role in our national energy transition – CEA and its member companies stand ready to help build the energy future that Canadians want and deserve.”
