Ottawa, September 7, 2017 – The Honourable Sergio Marchi, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA), issued the following statement regarding the joint collaborative report by the Conference Board of Canada and the Canadian Academy of Engineering, The Cost of a Cleaner Future: Examining the Economic Impacts of Reducing GHG Emission.
“CEA is pleased to co-fund this important report. Canada must continue its open and transparent conversation on climate action and clean growth – where we stand, where we want to go, how we will get there, by when, and what the cost implications are. This report contributes detailed information on all of these critical points.
A cleaner future will not happen overnight. Nor will it be easy. To build a brighter, better tomorrow we must nurture and sustain broad, national support and leverage key assets, including our electricity system. We must be upfront about costs in the short-term while seeking ways to mitigate price impacts for consumers. Possible mitigation measures were discussed in a paperreleased by CEA in late June entitled Canadian Climate Action: Clean Power and Consensus Building.
Clean energy is the future. CEA and its member companies stand ready to work collaboratively and constructively with governments at every level to achieve Canada’s climate and clean energy goals while also working to mitigate unintended competitiveness impacts on the economy, our businesses and Canadian families.”
