Canadian Electricity Association Celebrates 125 Years of Powering Canadian Progress

OTTAWA, Ontario – November 17, 2016. Yesterday, the Canadian Electricity Association (CEA) celebrated its 125th anniversary at an event in Toronto that included a series of panels, special guests, keynote speeches, and awards presentations.

“While the Canadian Electricity Association has evolved significantly over the last 125 years, it has remained focused on innovation and collaboration,” said the Honourable Sergio Marchi, President and CEO of the Canadian Electricity Association. “We remain committed to harnessing the power of clean electricity to build a greener and more prosperous future for all Canadians.”

The day-long anniversary celebration included keynote speeches from Ontario Energy Minister Glen Thibault and Congressman Bill Owens, in addition to panels about the role of electricity in Canada’s clean growth agenda and North American electricity integration. In addition, awards were presented to CEA member utilities who demonstrated leadership in sustainable development (the CEA Sustainable Electricity™ Awards) and health and safety (the CEA Occupational Health and Safety Awards).

Canadian electricity is an economic and environmental success story: with a generation mix that is over 80% greenhouse gas-free and climbing, Canada’s electricity is amongst the cleanest in the world. In addition, it has remained a key driver of economic growth while reducing emissions by 40% since 2000, more than any other industrial sector in the country.
