Alberta's First Electric Vehicle Universal Fast Charge Corridor

In the coming decade, electric vehicles (EV’s) are likely to see an increased rate of adoption by the public.

The availability of reliable charging infrastructure is a key factor in EV adoption. Although the EV market is relatively small in Alberta (about 1,000 vehicles), it is expected to grow in the coming years, which is in line with global trends. The development of a charging network is a strong catalyst for electric mobility, making short- and long-distance travel easier, while reducing range anxiety.

In November 2017, ATCO announced a partnership with FLO to bring the first Electric Vehicle Universal Fast Charge Corridor to Alberta.

This collaborative initiative is made possible by a partnership with Canadian Tire Corporation and Natural Resources Canada.

Chargers have been or will soon be installed at Canadian Tire Gas+ locations in Calgary, Red Deer and greater Edmonton.

Sites are conveniently located close to Highway 2 exits and near amenities like rest areas, shops and restaurants. Calgary’s station is currently energized and ready to use, with Red Deer’s soon to follow. The Edmonton station will be operational in summer 2018.

Our energy landscape is changing, which is why we are investing in infrastructure that empowers our customers to take full advantage of these exciting emerging technologies,” said Wayne Stensby, Managing Director, Electricity for ATCO. “Not only did our people lend their local expertise in connecting these cutting-edge charging stations to the grid, but ATCO’s retail energy business is providing the cost-effective, reliable electricity needed to give our customers peace of mind as they commute between Alberta’s three largest cities.

ATCO is committed to improving the lives of our customers by providing sustainable, innovative and comprehensive energy solutions.

Supporting projects related to electric vehicles solidifies their position as a leader in delivering forward looking alternative energy solutions that help Albertans embrace a cleaner energy future.

In addition to the Corridor, ATCO provides design, construction, maintenance and funding support for:

  • Commercial EV Charging
  • DC Fast Charging
  • Electric Bus Fleet Charging
  • Smart EV Charging
  • Solar/Battery Integration and Optimization

Each location will be powered by ATCOenergy and equipped with a Level 3 fast-charging station and a dual Level 2 charging station.
