Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) – with Distribution State Estimation (DSE)

Oakville Hydro is committed to innovative solutions to advance it distribution system and keep up with the pace of change.  As part of this focus, Oakville Hydro is implementing a ‘first in Ontario’ progressive tool called Distribution State Estimation (DSE) which is a key function for online monitoring and analysis in the Control Room.  The new DSE functionality is being deployed as part of the Advanced Distribution Management System (ADMS) from Survalent Technology Corporation.  The DSE module provides Control Room operators with a very detailed and precise assessment of operational grid characteristics that is constantly updated, based on changing loads and system conditions.

To enable this advanced analytic tool, Oakville Hydro engaged in a pilot project to increase the accuracy of its network model using a 3D representation of the physical grid equipment in the field.  This 3D representation was based on a LiDAR scan of the actual installed equipment, driving a true network model outcome.  Going forward, this powerful combination of a true network model, operationalized in the Control Room with DSE analytics, will significantly improve operational decision-making and optimization of Smart Grid technologies.  Oakville Hydro believes in the need for new system modeling and operation practices associated with the integration of distributed energy resources (solar, wind, storage, etc.) and the adoption of advanced technologies in its distribution network.

This powerful combination of a true network model, operationalized in the Control Room with DSE analytics, will significantly improve operational decision-making and optimization of Smart Grid technologies.
